Column Forms: Heavy Civil Octagonal

The geometrically true octagon, like a circle, allows for a tieless forming configuration. Although, unlike a circular form, capacities are greatly reduced.

Forms are typically designed in 2 pieces with stripping flanges at opposite corners. This not only allows the form to be erected and stripped in halves, it enables the addition of a "filler" panel should the column's size be larger in one axis.

Typically, this configuration requires at least one row of vertical thru-ties on 4 foot centers, depending on the length of the longer side. Alternative configurations involve the use of a horizontal waler system to transfer pressure loads outside the form itself thru the use of external "dry" tie rods. In some instances the waler system completely wraps the column.
